WHAT WE DO
The Burleigh County Weed Board controls noxious weeds in the right-of-ways and public lands throughout the County to control and prevent the spread of noxious weeds in accordance with ND Century Code 4.1-47-02. The Weed Board can answer questions regarding the control of noxious weeds in the state, cost share information, plant identification, assisting with weed control plans on your property.

Burleigh County coverage areas include 200 miles of state highways, 896 miles of township roads, 584 miles of county roads and 67 bridges. Also covered are 47 townships including 6 unorganized townships.

COST SHARE PROGRAM
The Weed Board Cost Share program is financial assistance for the landowner within Burleigh County. This program is available only for landowners outside the City limits. If you are within City limits, please contact your City Weed Officer. Cost share is not available for yard lawns, planted fields, or Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). The cost share deadline is November 1st. We have three options with forms available online.

• Milestone is a specialty herbicide that controls broadleaf weeds. A maximum of 18 quarts are available at a discount.
• Plateau herbicide is also available for purchase. A maximum of 9 gallons are available at a discount.
• We have a contracted company available to spray landowner property at a 50% cost share rate up to a maximum reimbursement of $1500. No cost share will be provided by Burleigh County Weed Board unless prior approval is received for any outside company that is used to spray your land.
• Landowners who would like to spray and purchase chemicals themselves will be paid 50% of the herbicide cost with a maximum reimbursement up to $1500.

NOXIOUS WEEDS
Noxious weeds are non-native, invasive plants that displace desirable vegetation and degrade natural and agricultural lands. They threaten our drinking water supply, agricultural crops, pasture lands and native habitats.

The following weeds have been declared noxious by ND Century Code 4.1-47; the County may also designate certain noxious weeds not yet listed by the State of North Dakota. Cost Share monies are available for the control of the following noxious North Dakota weeds.

• Dalmatian Toadflax
• Diffuse Knapweed
• Houndstongue
• Leafy Spurge
• Musk Thistle
• Palmer Amaranth
• Purple Loosestife
• Russian Knapweed
• Saltcedar
• Spotted Knapweed
• Yellow Toadflax

NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL
Control means to prevent the spread of any noxious weed by seed or any other propagating part by spraying. Such parts must not be transported in any manner. In accordance with ND Century Code 4.1-47-02, it shall be the duty of every person (individual, partnership, firm, corporation, company, society, association, the state or any department, agency or subdivision thereof, or any other entity) to eradicate or control the spread of noxious weeds on lands owned or controlled by him/her in the state of North Dakota. Penalties are provided for in ND Century Code 4.1-47-30.

AREAS OF NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL
The Burleigh County Weed Board will spray portions of the road ditches with herbicides for noxious weed control. Some of the herbicides used may have a haying or grazing restriction, meaning a certain amount of time must pass after herbicide application and before haying or grazing operations may begin. These restrictions are determined by the herbicide level.

Operators wanting to cut and make ditch hay should contact the Weed Control Officer to determine if and when a specific area has been treated and what the restriction timeline is. Operators wishing to not have their ditches sprayed prior to haying should also contact the Weed Control Officer. Road ditch spraying is conducted between May and November.

ORGANIC FARMING
Weed control is essential for Organic Farming. In vegetable and fruit plots, control can be accomplished with: Contact the Weed Board if you have concerns about spraying in your area. Before using any product claiming to be "organic" check the OMRI list of approved substances and with your certifier to be sure the product is acceptable for use. Some synthetic products are approved for restricted use only and their use for another purpose could jeopardize your organic certification. BIOLOGICAL CONTROL (BIOCONTROL)
Biological control is the use of natural enemies, such as insects or pathogens to reduce the populations of non-native weeds and other pests to minimal and acceptable levels. Leafy spurge flea beetles will be available in late June and early July at no cost to landowners to assist with large infestations of leafy spurge to treat no less than 4 acres.

FINES ASSOCIATED WITH NOXIOUS WEEDS
Failure to control noxious weeds can result in fines of an amount not to exceed eighty dollars per day of each violation, subject to a maximum penalty of $4,000 per year. Penalties imposed upon a landowner for failing to comply with the remedial requirements, as set forth in ND Century Code 4.1-47-29, are a lien against the property of the landowner from the day the notice is delivered under ND Century Code 4.1-47-28.
